A short lesson: how a crown can save a cracked tooth

A crack in a tooth can’t heal on its own, and every bite can flex it open a little more. A crown, a cap made to fit over the whole tooth, holds the tooth together and takes the force of chewing. Not every crack can be fixed this way, and an exam shows how deep it goes.

How a crown protects a cracked tooth: Cracked toothThree drawings of a molar cut in half. First, a crack (shaded) runs down from the biting surface. Second, the tooth has been shaped smaller, and a thin outline shows the layer that was removed. Third, a crown (shaded) covers the shaped tooth and restores its original form.

How a crown protects a cracked tooth, in three stages.

  1. Cracked tooth. A crack runs down from the chewing surface. Biting can flex it open, which can hurt and can let bacteria in.

  2. Shaped for a crown. With the tooth numbed, it’s shaped to make room for the crown.

  3. Crown in place. The crown covers the tooth and holds it together, so it can take the force of chewing again.
